My Grade 11 English Journey

During this course, I have created many works that helped improve my writing ability.

Through lessons and practice, I learned how to properly structure my opinions and essays. I have also learned how to use writing techniques, such as language features and sentence types, to enhance my works.

I believe that the most valuable ability that I have learned this term is thinking deeply and creatively in my writing. In analytical writing, this allows to look past the surface level information in order to analyze deeper meanings and significance. In creative writing, I have learned how to tell a story in a way that communicates my desired vision in a compelling way.

Everything that I have learned will be very beneficial in my future. Throughout Grade 12 English, I will have the opportunity to build on all of the concepts that I learned. My experience during this term will facilitate my success in ENG4U.

Everything that I have learned will also be helpful in my life after high school. Regardless of my choice of post secondary program, the ability to write efficiently and sophisticatedly will be priceless. The techniques learned in ENG3U could be used in essays, lab reports, artwork descriptions, and virtually any other university assignment.

These are the five tasks that I am the most proud of:

"Bad dreams are never a good sign for demigods; it always means that trouble’s coming."

Adapting Hamlet was a creative writing piece that I created during this course. My goal was to adapt the story and characters of Hamlet into the writing style and universe of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

I am proud of this work because I felt that I succeeded in using the tone of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians books. I took time to consider my choice of writing style and dialogue. I also believe that my choice of adaptation was creative and fit very well with the events of the story. I also found this work interesting to create, since I was able to connect it to a series that I enjoy.

"Whether the indulged fantasy world of Brontë or the insane delusions of Clare, both poets escaped the realities of life."

My essay comparing the poems The Night is Darkening Round Me, by Emily Brontë and I Am, by John Clare focuses on the way that the lives and identities of the poets are represented. I am proud of the way that I presented and defended my opinions. I am also proud of my thesis and use of vocabulary. Overall, I feel that I was able to effectively analyze the significance behind both poems and how they compare to each other.

"Madness can make previously moral individuals commit atrocious deeds. It changes how a person behaves to such a degree that it affects whether or not we place guilt onto the individual."

Another essay that I wrote in this course was an essay on Hamlet and the theme of madness. I am proud of this essay because I thought profoundly into the story of Hamlet and was able to come up with well fleshed out opinions. I am also happy with the quotes I used to defend my opinions, as I believe they were very relevant to the topic. I am particularly proud of how I tied different ideas together to form quality theses and justifications.

"Shmuel has so many other friends inside the fence, but Bruno thinks that he’s Shmuel’s best friend. He hopes he is."

I also wrote a creative writing piece based on The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. I am proud of this work because I was able to use many of the same methods as Boyne, especially in the narrative style. This assignment was a chance for me to apply concepts that I learned in class, and I am proud of my application. I am also very proud of how I conveyed emotion and personality in my writing.

"By writing in such a way that highlights Bruno’s ignorance, and therefore innocence, Boyne influences readers to pity him."

The last work that I will be mentioning is an analysis I wrote on The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. This was one of the earlier analytical writing assignments in the course. This is part of the reason that I am so proud of it. The effort that I put into this analysis prepared me for the analytical works to come. I am proud of my in depth analysis of the characterization in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and how I was able to tie my ideas into the real world context.

Website Reflection:

This website is a way for me to share all of the literary works I create. I hope that when visiting my website, people see an easily manageable format. I also hope it appears both professional and aesthetically pleasing.

In order to achieve these goals, I created a simple website. I included clear sections, such as creative writing, so people can easily find the work they are looking for. I kept the colours and graphics to a minimum to appear organized and professional. However, I made sure to use a pop of purple in the website design, as well as a picture with every post. This makes my website more interesting to look at.
